CARA LEFT THE office. She didn’t say anything to anyone, she simply walked out. After the shock of the press conference, she was in no mood to track down her few belongings from that desk. She could deal with that tomorrow.

She got in the car, intending to drive until she had come to some conclusion about the next step she should take. Jason would probably tell her to trust him and his colleagues to find Dane, but the cops assigned to her brother’s case had said much the same and had ended up doing nothing. She hadn’t been able to help her brother, but she might be able to help Dane. That thought made it impossible to sit at home and do nothing.

She ended up at Black Canyon of Gunnison National Park, maybe out of some subconscious desire to retrace Dane’s steps, to figure out what had gotten into his head that day. As she parked at the Dragon Point overlook, she was startled to find two Ranger Brigade SUVs, and Jason with Officer Hudson.

“Cara, what are you doing here?” Jason asked as she approached.

“Have you found any sign of Dane?” she asked. “I’m worried he might be out there alone and hurt.”

“We don’t know for sure the blood we found was his,” Hud said. “Only his type.”

“Blood?” She staggered, suddenly dizzy. “What blood? Dane’s blood? Where?”

Jason grabbed her arms, steadying her. “The bandana the second flash drive was wrapped in had some bloodstains. Not a lot of blood.” He glared at Hud. “It matches Dane’s blood type, but it wasn’t necessarily a recent stain. It could have been from a long time ago. And it might have been from someone besides Dane.”

She pulled out of his grasp. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to upset you.”

“I’m already upset. Or hadn’t you realized?”

Hud’s shoulder-mounted radio crackled and he turned away. Jason looked back to Cara, his arms outstretched, as if he wanted to touch her again. But he kept his distance. “We haven’t found any more blood,” he said. “It may not even be significant.”

“You’ve spent how many hours at my house the past few days and you didn’t think to mention this? I thought you weren’t going to shut me out. But that’s exactly what you’re doing.”

“I need to go,” Hud said, taking a few steps toward them.

“Do you need help?” Jason asked. Did she imagine the desperation in his eyes?

“No.” Hud glanced at Cara. “You’d better stay here and take care of this.”

Cara glared at him. She was not a “this.”

After Hudson left, Jason moved to her side. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “Why aren’t you at work?”

“You’re telling me the truth about the blood? There wasn’t much of it, and you haven’t found any more?”

“Yes. We’ve been searching for several days and we haven’t found anything.” He took her arm. “I know you want to stay informed about this case, but it would be irresponsible of me
